As always St Kilda has a way of finding itself in the news, and finding itself in controversy. This week it came with the ‘mutual’ parting ways of the club with coach Grant Thomas.
There have always been rumblings. There has always been bitterness from the media and from opposition supporters, but for the most (silent) part, within St Kilda ranks there has always been admiration and support.
From a man that has brought so many different new things to football (think: rotating captaincies, overseas end-of-year trips, dual-role of coach and football manager, among so many other things) it was weird to see him go. Especially this way. We’ve been in the finals for the last three years; sure, we didn’t have as strong of a performance as you would have expected (or even demanded), but it wasn’t like we were disgraced.
At the press conference everyone kept saying ‘mutual decision’, but it quickly became clear that he was pushed. The question is, as always with St Kilda, where to from here?
Obviously a new coach, but who? Darren Cresswell would be top of the list, you’d think, but with recent allegations of sexual harrasement, it might be too big of a risk, even for St Kilda. John Longmire would be there, and I’ve even heard Ken Sheldon’s name being thrown around. It’ll certainly make for the most interesting post-season break in a while.
Like every St Kilda supporter learns quickly — you ride all the waves with a smile and pessimism so you’re not let down at the end of the day. Carn Sainters, but really, you bloody idiots.
